3 children and a lake. Family photography at it’s best

What happens when you cross 3 children, with a lake and a summers day?!

PERFECTION.

When a client books a shoot, I always ask a little bit about who they are, what their children are like and ultimately what they are looking for from a shoot. Everyone has a story they want to remember and I love to listen to these tales. This is really important - if you want photographs of your family memories, then any photographer you speak to should be asking these questions!

Stories don’t need to be extraordinary to be worthy of memory. Our lives are made up mostly of the everyday, and it’s that every day we need to keep hold of and remember.

This story behind this shoot was lovely.

It was heartfelt, and meant so much to them as a family.

The shoot was at …. where the children had grown up. They had spent many summers there, swimming and water skiing. The children’s childhoods were all wrapped up in this lake.

With 3 slightly older children, we went for a walk at first, to have a look at the whole lake and find some treasures along the way. The children love nature, and we found sticks and feathers and the children showed off their running and cartwheels.

We stopped for a glorious ice cream as it was HOT. I love watching children pick ice creams, it changes so much through childhood. At the beginning, they don’t care, it’s just a cold thing which tastes good. Then, the brightly coloured, sprinkled laden ice lollies get their chance to shine…the more rainbow coloured the better. Next, as they get that little bit older, they want ice cream that tastes like ice cream, and it’s the grown up flavours at the ready!

As I shoot in a way that’s child led…ice cream breaks aren’t a problem, in fact, they are actively encouraged.

After an ice cream break, it was time to swim. The kids dived in, happy in this natural environment that they call home with their parents joining in.

I just want to highlight here, for me, this is the entire point of a family photoshoot. It’s where you feel comfortable and love. Your life is unique, it’s not the same as anyone elses, and my style of shooting allows for the whole family to be relaxed and happy.

I love this image below. It speaks to me as a parent. Relaxed, in your happy place, but with your children never more than a stones through away.

It was such a fun shoot, the children totally relaxed in an environment that they know and love. Shoots should never be stressful or forced, it should always be a true representation of your life and how you live it.
